Jareth was leaning against a doorframe that looked out into one of the castle’s many gardens. Sarah was surprised to see that his hair had been restrained into a faux hawk. She joined him, placing her hands on his chest, before reaching up to run a finger over a neat braid along the side of his head. She smiled as he purred in response, before she tapped the braid and lifted an eyebrow in query. Raising the hand on his chest to his lips to place a kiss on her palm, Jareth ushered her into the garden.

As she stepped into the garden, she didn’t expect to find Doug sitting in the shade of a tree as he attempted to wrangle one of several hairdressers' mannequins into submission. She took a seat and watched him, his tongue poking out slightly as he worked on a slightly messy braid, his fingers still clumsy at the recently learned skill.

The neatness of Jareth’s hair made it unlikely to have been Doug’s work, so looking around for other suspects, she saw Ada, George and recognised Rook’s wolf form as well, with the trio involved in a game of tag. As Ada’s tight curls had been corralled into neat braids, that narrowed the likely culprit down to Rook.

Ada ran across to greet Sarah. “Hello Mrs King,” Ada bowed, stumbling slightly when George hipchecked her. “I mean, your Majesty.” She grinned broadly as she corrected her mistake.

Sarah waved away the concern. “Your braids are lovely. Did you do them?”

Ada shook her head, the beads clacking softly. “Rook did them. She’s teaching Doug, so he can do my hair.”

“That’s very thoughtful of her.”

Sarah was not surprised when Rook shifted to her human form and nudged one of the mannequins in her direction. “Would you like to try?” Sarah nodded as she accepted a faceless mannequin adorned with what felt like real hair. Her model sported fine straight hair, while Doug’s was densely curled, like Ada’s hair.

Watching as Rook showed her a technique a little different to the French braids she was familiar with, Sarah she started sectioning off her models' hair to begin. As she worked, she noted that all four of her companions had the same polychromatic shade of hair, which she assumed was due to proximity to Doug’s magic. What was curious is that while George’s coat was coloured, only Rook’s hair in her human form was affected.

Sarah was also sure that when she’d first met her two newest subjects, that Ada’s eyes had been brown and George’s were golden, yet now their eyes were the same shade of amber. It was a subtle change and she wondered how else the Labyrinth would change them over time.

As she neatly braided the hair along a central part, Sarah thought of her silent conversation with a still watching Jareth and the fun of testing her skills on him later to see if she could make him purr again.
