Sarah had no idea where Jareth had sent the goblins but she had a horrible feeling that a large number of the castle horde were about to be banned from the premises due to eau de bog.

Rook was sprawled on the training room mats looking paler than Jareth, even her eyes looked grey and Sarah was startled to notice that there was a fine brown slash across her left eye.

Bishop had a hand on Rook’s shoulder to stop her from getting up and her leg just looked wrong. Catching Jareth’s eye, Sarah mouthed, “Broken?” He gave her a minute shake of his head and turned his attention to Rook.

Jareth knelt by Rook, a hand cupping her face as he ran his thumb across her cheekbone. “You’ve got a dislocated hip.”

“That would explain why it feels exceedingly unpleasant.” Sarah blinked. It seemed that when Rook was in pain she was both far less sweary than usual as well as very politely understated, but still had the presence of mind to modify her accent for Sarah’s benefit. Sarah had dislocated a toe once and did not want to contemplate that level of pain on a larger scale. She shuddered at the thought.

“We’re going to need to manhandle you a little.” Rook closed her eyes and nodded. Jareth’s tone was low and soothing and Sarah initially thought it was to calm Rook, but aside from being in pain, the woman just looked resigned and annoyed at being injured. It was Bishop and Jareth himself who looked distraught.

Jareth looked up at Sarah. “Typically, Rook can heal herself without issue. Just shifting forms will repair most injuries, but complex breaks and dislocations need a little assistance. We need to do a reduction of a posterior hip dislocation.” Her eyes flicked to Bishop who held one of Rook’s hands in a death grip.

“You need to lose the trou, so we can do this.” Rook nodded and Jareth vanished her breeches with a gesture then glanced at Bishop. “I need you to provide downward pressure so I can manipulate the leg.” He positioned himself as Jareth requested. “Rook, this will hurt a lot, but you’ll feel a lot better once I put this in.” Sarah suspected that this was not Rook’s first rodeo and the explanation was for her benefit.

Jareth gripped Rook’s ankle and placed his forearm under her knee. “Ready?”

Rook nodded. “Do it.”

“I need you to relax, love. Deep breath, then slowly out.” Sarah winced as Jareth applied traction to Rook’s thigh and twisted it until the hip popped back into place. Everyone in the room breathed out a sigh of relief.

Bishop swung the still half naked Rook into his arms making her pallor even more pronounced. She buried her nose in his neck and inhaled deeply, as she idly ran her fingers through his braids.

Jareth leaned over and kissed her forehead. “Rest up and we’ll catch up tomorrow morning to reassess the damage.”
